About Me

Tom is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Professional Life Coach specializing in working with individuals, couples, families, and organizations. He maintains a private practice in Williamsburg, Virginia where he lives with his wife, (22 yo) adult son, and his dog Maxx.

With more than 32 years of clinical experience as a Behavioral Health Therapist and Certified Professional Life Coach, Tom brings years of clinical expertise and a proven track record to the therapeutic relationship. Tom is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where he interned at Children's Hospital and University Hospital. He started his career at the Yale Psychiatric Institute, which was a part of the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven Connecticut serving on a locked adolescent inpatient unit for 4 years. He has served as Manager/Clinical Coordinator of 3 Partial Day Hospital programs (PHP/IOP), treating clients from 12-79 years old. He specializes in Solution Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family System and Christian Counselling. Tom works with a broad spectrum of clients from every walk of life, socioeconomic background, and every religious and sexual orientation. Tom is a recognized human behavior expert, motivator, speaker, educator, frequently sought-after mental health expert appearing in all forms of media: television news, radio programs, internet, and newspapers.

Tom is an interactive therapist. His therapeutic approach is to challenge the client to identify patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors which have not resulted in positive outcomes. He works with each client to help them modify his/her thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, identifying what has worked in the past. Positive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that have manifested healthy outcomes are then consistently reinforced which helps clients to reach their personal goals, stabilize their moods and decrease their disruptive symptoms. The new actions lead clients to feel better about themselves, their circumstances, thus empowering them to create better outcomes for their lives. He provides support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges, overcoming negative self talk and other destructive patterns. He integrates complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, he works with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.
